Permanent magnet HVAC motors are ‘most efficient’

04 February, 2019

WEG has developed a range of electronically commutated permanent magnet motors with IEC 80 aluminium housings, specifically for HVAC (heating, ventliation and air-conditioning) applications. The WECM motors achieve an IE5 efficiency rating, and packaged with an impeller, they comply with all current and future EU directives for HVAC.

The motors span the power range 0.12–1.1kW and have rated speeds of 1,500, 1,800 or 3,000 rpm. They provide constant torque over their speed range, and the speed can be set either remotely or using on-board pushbuttons which allow continuous adjustment from 200 to 1,500 or 1,800 rpm, or 500–3,000 rpm. Voltage, current and frequency can be controlled remotely.

The IP55-protected motors are TENV (totally enclosed and non-ventilated) for ratings up to 650W, and TEAO (totally enclosed air over) for higher power levels, when the airflow from the driven fan provides the cooling. Noise and vibration levels are said to be low – about 40dB(A).

WEG claims that its WECM HVAC motors are the most efficient on the market

“Exterior rotor solutions currently available on the market have a larger diameter than the WECM series, leading to higher airflow losses,” points out Wilmar Henning, managing director of WEG Germany. “The WEG solution is therefore the most efficient on the market.”
